Safeguarding information for dentists
Information on child safeguarding, reporting, advice and support in your area. There are a range of resources to access, read and download.

Safeguarding is about protecting children and adults from abuse or neglect and educating those around them to recognise the signs and dangers.

The Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act introduces a strengthened, robust and effective partnership approach to safeguarding.

One of the most important principles of safeguarding is that it is everyone’s responsibility. Each professional and organisation must do everything they can, to ensure that children and adults at risk are protected from abuse.

National Independent Safeguarding Board

We have established a National Independent Safeguarding Board to work with the safeguarding adults boards and safeguarding children boards across Wales.

The board’s duties are to:

1. Provide support and advice to safeguarding boards with a view to ensuring that they are effective
2. Report on the adequacy and effectiveness of arrangements to safeguard children and adults in Wales
3. Make recommendations to the Welsh Ministers as to how those arrangements could be improved.

All Wales Child Protection Procedures (AWCPP)

The AWCPP are an essential part of safeguarding children and promoting their welfare. They inform child protection practice in each of the local and regional safeguarding children boards across Wales. They are managed by the All-Wales Child Protection Review Group  which represents all of Wales’ safeguarding children boards and partner agencies.

A project is now underway to update and replace these procedures.

National action plan to prevent and protect children and young people from sexual exploitation

This national action plan sets out a framework and minimum standards that Safeguarding Children Boards and partner agencies should work collectively and individually towards and build on:

Prevent and protect children and young people from sexual exploitation.
Provide responsive, appropriate and consistent support to those identified as being subject to or at risk of sexual exploitation.
Contribute to the identification, disruption and prosecution of perpetrators.
