Should you get free dental care?

by dan.beckett@door4.com 26 Jul 2016 | Categories: All news items, Referral news for patients, Your oral health

Having an annual check-up with a dentist can help you to keep your teeth and gums healthy, even if you have false teeth.

In England you will be entitled to free NHS dental check-ups and treatment if you receive Pension Guarantee Credit. In Scotland, NHS check-ups are free for everyone, and in Wales they’re free if you’re 60 or over.

If you don’t receive Pension Guarantee Credit, you can still get help if you qualify for the NHS Low Income Scheme. You can apply for this scheme if you live on a low income and all your savings, capital and property come to less than £16,000 (or £23,250 if you live in a care home). To apply, you need to fill in a HC1 form which you can get from your GP, dentist, optician, the NHS website or the Help with Healthcosts Helpline.

If you don’t qualify for free treatment, dental costs will vary depending on the type of treatment you need. Call the NHS dental services helpline for more information (0300 330 1348), or visit the NHS Choices website (nhs.uk).
